Iowa Legislation to Protect Soldier Jobs: Financial News - Yahoo! Finance: “Federal law requires that those jobs be protected, but backers of a new law argued that if a company doesn’t hold a position open, a soldier’s only recourse is to file a lawsuit that can take years to resolve. ‘It doesn’t always work,’ said Rep. McKinley Bailey, D-Webster City, a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan. ‘It’s a little distant.’ At a Statehouse news conference, the lawmakers pointed to Capt. Pam Reynolds, a physical therapist from Ames who was called to active duty in 2006. After a 15-month deployment, she returned only to find she had to apply again for her civilian job, then was offered a position with a significant pay cut. While many veterans realize that federal law protects their jobs, the understanding is vague and many don’t know how to react, Reynolds said.”
